Touchstones of Goodness

Courage. Discipline. Justice. Wisdom. Marcus Aurelius has called them the “touchstones of goodness.”

They’re known as the cardinal virtues, as adopted by Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and just about every other philosophy.

Called ‘cardinal’ virtues because, as C. S. Lewis pointed out, the word comes from the Latin cardo, which means hinge! These are the actual hinges the metaphorical 'door-to-the-good life' swings on. Your personal compass for living well is hinged on north, south, east, and west!

Touchstones of goodness for my journey

Guidance to what to do in life, who you would be on your personal journey, how to behave along the way, and how to respond in every situation with:

Courage; bravery, fortitude, honour, sacrifice.

When I joined the fetish scene 39 years ago, no one know about it. It was underground, mysterious and shady. There was no internet and it wasn't in the Encyclopaedia Britannica! It took a leap of faith, and a whole lot of courage, and found myself in my first fetish club - Submission in 1988. Thankfully I had my trans mistress friend from San Francisco - Mistress Kay to hold my hand. Courage again six years later start my own fetish club - The Rubber Nipple Club.

Trans Mistress Kay

Discipline; self-control, moderation, composure, balance.

Dedication and tenacity is how you keep a club going for 22 years (every month) You don't run it without discipline. That's 264 consecutive montly events without missing a month. I'm still a promoter 32 years later with Rubber Cult.

Justice; fairness, service, fellowship, goodness, kindness.

Known for my nonjudgmental kindness, fairness in business and dedication to the community. This is etched in my very soul. "What I know to be true of myself, no one can ever take away", by moi.

Wisdom; knowledge, education, truth, self-reflection, serenity.

Learning has been the cornerstone to my whole ethos of life. Continually raising my game, by being the best I can be. Not for others, but for me. After all, I get up at 6am everyday to swim and exercise. I don't have to, I want to, as I've learnt this the way to live a healthy life...mind, body and soul.

This is the key to a life of excellence

Knowledge I have acquired because I have trodden that path…in every sense.

Marcus wrote “If, at some point in your life, you should come across anything better than justice, prudence, self-control, courage…if you find anything better than that, embrace it without reservation, as it must be an extraordinary thing indeed.”

That was written almost twenty centuries ago. We have evolved, developed and discovered a lot of things since then, planes, trains and automobiles…the worldwide web, cures for diseases, AI,  but have we found anything better?

In conclusion, I think not. And it’s unlikely we ever will. So, memorise these four virtues. Act on them and keep them close to your heart always. Stoic philosophy.
